“Veganism” denotes a philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude – as far as is possible and practicable – all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose; and by extension, promotes the development and use of animal-free alternatives for the benefit of humans, animals and the environment.
1. Ahimsa is one of the cardinal virtues and an important tenet of major Indian religions (Jainism, Hinduism, and Buddhism). Ahimsa is a multidimensional concept, inspired by the premise that all living beings have the spark of the divine spiritual energy; therefore, to hurt another being is to hurt oneself.
We humans are created in the image of God, with love, compassion, and justice being the major attributes of that image.
We humans have also been commissioned to be stewards of the earth and of all of living creatures.
As imagers of God, it is, therefore, our moral responsibility to care for the earth and all living creatures with love, compassion and justice.
In this day and age of exponential population grow and environmental crisis, veganism is the best alternative to fulfilling our role as God imaging stewards.
